Caring for Your Sculpture

Every piece we make is mild steel or stainless steel — metal hammered and welded by hand. Call it a sculpture, a garden ornament or a statue; the two steels behave differently outdoors, and most of what follows comes down to which one you have.

01

Mild steel

Left to itself, mild steel will develop a rusty patina over time. That is the natural oxidation we know as rust, and on our pieces it is the finish, not a fault.

02

Oil

Oil slows or halts the oxidation. Where a piece leaves us oil sealed, its page says so in the finish line. Re-oiling holds the patina where it is; left alone, the rust will keep developing. Either is fine — it depends on the look you want.

03

Stainless steel

Stainless steel will not rust. It keeps its silver finish, and we offer it dull, brushed or polished.

04

Where it sits

Each piece’s page says where it suits best. The Sitting Barn Owl and the Robin work indoors or in a sheltered spot in the garden; the Sunflower is designed for a border or against a wall; the Flying Barn Owl is made for outdoors.

Ask us

If you are unsure which steel suits your garden, or how a piece will weather where you are, ask before you order.
